General Facts about transports in Lisbon

Tickets can be purchased in all buses and at all metro (underground/subway) stations; some metro stations are manned but they all have vending machines (that often give change). It is cheaper to buy a carnet of tickets. Carnets of bus tickets are not sold on the buses. They can be bought at special selling points (there is one at Campo Pequeno and another one at Sete Rios). Carnets of metro tickets can be bought at metro stations, namely from the vending machines.

All sorts of information about the bus transportation system in Lisbon, including an interactive route planner, can be found in the CARRIS[1] web site. The underground (metro) web site[2] also features a network diagram and other useful information.

The main campus of the University of Lisbon[3], known as "Cidade Universitária" is well served both by buses and the underground. A map covering the area of the main campus is shown below.

From the Airport to the Center

By taxi

A taxi ride from the airport to the hotels or to the IST-Alameda Campus should cost you around 8/10 Euro, including charges for the luggage carried in the boot. A taxi can take up to 4 passengers.

By bus

There is a special bus "AERO-BUS" leaving from the airport's arrivals hall to the City Centre, everyday between 7 am and 9 pm, and every 20 minutes (see route map on the right).

The ticket is around 2.2 Euro and can be purchased in the bus. This ticket is valid for another bus or tram ride on the same day.

For hotels Holyday Inn Continental, Vip Zurique, and Berna, you should leave at Campo Pequeno (near the Bull Fight Ring, very easy to recognise).

For hotels Miraparque and Fénix, you should leave at Marquês de Pombal.

For hotels Alfa Corinthia, Mercure and Ibis there is no direct bus. You can take the Aero Bus for Entrecampos and change for bus 31.

The bus ride will take you around 10 to 20 minutes depending on the traffic.

To IST-Alameda Campus

By underground

IST lies in between "Alameda" station, the junction of the red line with the green line, "Saldanha" station, on the yellow line. IST is a ten minutes walk from either station.

Walking

If you like a brisk walk in the morning, it will take you around 20 minutes to walk from the hotels located near Campo Pequeno (Holiday Inn Continental, Berna and Zurique). Just go south along Av. 5 de Outubro or Av. República, and turn left on Av. João Crisóstomo. Walk along the street, and you will find the IST in front of you. Turn left, and walk with the Institute's wall on your right, until you reach the North gate, in Av. Antonio José de Almeida (this is the only gate open on weekends).
